In the Valley of the Blind

Mallory managed to avoid smiling as she lingered behind the warlord and his guards.Β  The entourage ascended the marble steps of what had been the community building, and the crowd on the grounds cheered as their presumed leader, clothes tattered and stained, turned to face them.

Scattered columns of smoke rose behind and to the left of the gleeful hordes while the stench of burned fabric and leather and flesh lingered in the air.Β  The warlord raised his arms, but it was more likely the guards drawing their swords that encouraged the rabble to soften their roars.

Mallory took her place behind and to one side of the cluster, standing unnoticed by the throng, but able to observe them.

Their perceived liberator’s shout burst over the assembly like a cannon shot.Β  β€œFreedom!”

They erupted the word back at him, but sporadically and discordant, making the outburst garbled.Β  Some of them were probably also slurring.Β  She’d seen to it that the Ambrosia she developed months ago flowed freely to the populace just before their uprising.

β€œToday belongs to you!”  The warlord clenched his raised hands into fists.Β  β€œAnd you deserve this celebration!”

The crowd roared its agreement.Β  He would have to keep his speech short, but since Mallory informed him he couldn’t have any Ambrosia until after making the announcement, he was motivated to remain brief.

β€œSo celebrate to the fullest!Β  Celebrate in all the ways you were never allowed to before, because now you are free!Β  Free to do whatever you want, whenever you want!”

The throng cheered again.Β  Revelries had already started commencing within pockets of it, involving gluttony and copulating and other self-indulgences.Β  They would be too distracted to pay much attention to what he had to say next.

Distraction had always been her ally.Β  During her perfection of the Ambrosia, Mallory had slipped samples to a selected few, and she also whispered how their desires were stymied by the Traditions of the Elders.

How dare these decrepit suppressors stand on the shoulders of their ancestors and decree how society should conduct itself?Β  Didn’t they understand that their advanced ages made them senile instead of wise?Β  And didn’t this lack of understanding prove their senility?

Her whispers, spoken out loud by those who listened to her, convinced others who sampled the Ambrosia.Β  Their arguments became a shout.Β  The Elders, and a few of the others who still clung to tradition, attempted to illustrate why the complainers were wrong.Β  But now they were silenced.

Mallory suppressed a smile again as she glanced at the columns of smoke.

β€œNow that we’ve swept aside those who stood in our way, we are free to practice our own beliefs on top of their ashes!”  The warlord lowered his hands and slammed a fist into his palm.Β  β€œAnd as your king I will take care of all your freedoms!”

More cheers.Β  Nobody seemed to notice what he really said.

β€œWe will be the freest society to ever walk in this valley because there will be no more differences among us!Β  Everybody will be the same because I, your king, have given you this freedom!”

Their festivities were probably producing more of the cheers than his words, but the self-appointed king nodded to his guards.Β  They sheathed their swords as he raised his hands again.

Even he was unaware that she had appointed him that title.

β€œNow let us begin the celebration of a lifetime!”

The horde roared its approval and debaucheries proceeded in earnest.Β  As the king turned toward her, the guards sauntered into the crowd.Β  They believed it was his orders they were following, and knew they wouldn’t get any Ambrosia until after they returned with as much wealth as they could pilfer from the populace … who in this state could be easily persuaded they were giving up their goods by their own free will.

Everybody would be the same, now, which meant somebody had to look after the material goods that made them different.

The new king held out as his hands as he stood before her.Β  β€œYou know what I want.”

She reached inside the pocket of her coat, and withdrew a small bottle that she dropped into his palms.Β  She’d already measured out the amount of Ambrosia he was allowed to have.

Mallory finally allowed herself to smile.Β  β€œYou deserve every bit of what’s coming to you.”

He grinned like a toddler with a stick of candy and darted into the horde to join in their revelries.Β  She turned away and strolled toward the entrance of the future palace.Β  The approach of a young man, eyes glistening with eagerness, made her wary.

β€œPardon me, madam.”  At least he was still capable of exhibiting manners.Β  β€œI work for the new Indulgence Academy, and wanted some information for the pamphlet we’ll send out to our victorious community.”

Ah, one of the lackeys.Β  Still, the fact he wasn’t drugged out of his mind already meant he might be a bit too inquisitive.Β  She would be wise to keep an eye on him.

Mallory offered an indulgent smile.Β  β€œThe king has any information you want.”

β€œYes, I know.”  He nodded.Β  β€œBut I did notice you with him, so I wondered if you were going to be part of his cabinet.”

β€œNo.”  She belonged in the shadows, after all, and didn’t want him possibly exposing her to daylight.Β  Eventually these idiots would start realizing what they’d given up, and might lash out to regain what they’d lost.Β  As long as she controlled the Ambrosia, she controlled the people.Β  The less they knew about her, the better.Β  β€œI’m just another spectator.”

β€œIs there any role you’ll play?”

β€œOh, I’m just a servant lass.”  Mallory took a step, but then hesitated and glanced back at him.Β  As long as everybody was blind to her schemes, she could probably indulge in a bit of proclaiming the power she truly possessed.Β  β€œI merely serve as the king’s one good eye.”

  1. A new tack Abe. An exciting direction too. Mallory sounds very much like the “Kings” assassin too. At least, that’s my guess that formed quite early by the wish to remain somewhat anonymous.
Excellent play on removing one tyrant for potentially another with cries of things will be much better now. Almost Trumpian, as it were. Or any matter of win-at-all-costs politics without telling anyone what they are voting for apart from the current lot they are doing the country in.

I also read your novelette with IMP during the surgical recovery too. It was very good to revisit the old character. It made me realise we’ve been doing BB for quite some time now.

Good take on the prompt and is this first of another mini-series?

    • Thank you! A word like Unaware could only lead me to darkness and deception. No plans at the moment to continue with this tale, but I’ve been around long enough to know never say never. Hopefully you’re well on the mend, probably catching up on both reading and writing. Regarding the latter, I’ll have to try again later to comment on your story. WP wouldn’t let me do so on my first attempt again. I think it’s a conspiracy….

      • didn’t that happen last time too? If it does it again let me know and I’ll contact WP to see if they can figure it out.

I think next months is going to be filled with deer and the odd bat haha. That’s if you’ve seen the prompt schedule.

      • Just came back from trying again and this time it worked. Yeah, that happened last month, but at least the problem seems temporary. Funny what you said about deer and bats – I have been mulling over something that involves one of them!

      • Haha, yes, I just replied. I thought it was you that had a problem last month too. Very weird as your comment loads, so nothing should be interfering with your attempts

    That gave me pause.
This whole post gave me pause. It’s terrifying to know that some ‘leaders’ are just puppets. It’s much more difficult to fight what you can’t see and/or know. However, you can glean a bit of that shadow by looking at the spokesperson.
    Great read!

  3. A very sharp portrayal of a power behind the throne / kingmaker. Mallory is shown to be an expert manipulator two or three steps above the rest, with the warlord simply a bombastic marionette.
You’ve crafted the dynamics very well, contrasting Mallory’s composure with the vanity of the warlord and the vapid hysteria of the crowd. I liked the revelation in his speech “Everybody will be the same because I, your king, have given you this freedom”- he makes a terrible error of saying out loud he has given freedom (so it’s not really freedom is it?) and the crowd don’t notice.

Then there’s one smidge at the end which suggests Mallory a bit too sure of herself has tripped up, and not noticed “I merely serve as the king’s one good eye.” Somebody, maybe that young fellow, once all the clamour has died down and a few harsh realities seep in might well reflect on those.
Was Mallory unaware she’d slipped up?

Good story Abe with lots of commentary and insight into power games.
